First Step Cambodia provides training courses that are essential in building your capacity as a social worker. They will build on your knowledge of child protection issues and the nature of sexual abuse, teach you how to identify, respond to, and refer cases of sexual violence, help you understand the needs of boys and the issues they face, and how to work effectively with and provide quality social work services to vulnerable families and children.
What originally started as one in-depth training course of 47 days on identifying and responding to situations in which boys are at risk of and, or, affected by sexual abuse ("Boys First Training"), has evolved in a range of interrelated social work and child protection courses that develop the knowledge and social work skills of Cambodian professionals who work for/with children.

Our training curricula
Social work practice with children affected by sexual abuse
The course improves, broadens and deepens the skills and confidence of professionals working with children affected by or at risk of sexual abuse. The course helps participants to develop analytical and critical thinking skills and to apply new learning to all aspects of their work. Home assignments encourage the sharing of knowledge with colleagues, friends and community. Formerly known as the 'Boys First' training. Read a case study here.

This specialised course builds the capacity of social workers to: (1) identify when a child is displaying potential harmful sexual behavior and conduct initial assessments of the issue; (2) provide appropriate and effective initial response and referrals to specialist services for full assessment, services and resources; and follow-up referrals to ensure that services are received and benefit the child and their family. How to Support Families Affected by Psychosocial Problems
This course increases the capacity of social work professionals in understanding how to work with the families of vulnerable children and enhances their skills in assessing and conducting interventions with families. The course also increases participants’ confidence to work with families by providing practical strategies and necessary tools.

Case management is an approach to service delivery that attempts to ensure that clients with complex, multi-faceted problems receive all the services they need in a timely and appropriate fashion. Therefore, case management plays an important role in the clients' recovery and the response to needs. The course improves social workers’ case management skills using First Step Cambodia’s case management system and tools. Read a case study here.

How to Support People with Alcohol Problems
The course allows participants to reflect on personal and professional experiences related to alcohol drinking behaviors, to gain knowledge and skills to help people with alcohol problems to drink responsibly, and to enhance participants’ confidence in their service provision to parents and families impacted by alcohol abuse.
